Sex offender gets prison term for failing to register

SALEM — A Salem man was sentenced to two to three years in state prison Monday after admitting that he’d failed to register as a sex offender.

Michael Friedman, 28, admitted during a hearing in Salem Superior Court that he didn’t tell Salem police last year when he moved to a rooming house at 116 Lafayette St.

It’s not the first time he’s failed to register as a Level 2 offender; court documents show that he’s been charged with failing to register twice before in Salem and once in Haverhill.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, the original “subsequent offense” charge was reduced, meaning Friedman avoided a minimum mandatory five-year term.

After his release, Friedman will be on community parole supervision for life.

In 2007 Friedman, then 22, was charged after several teenage girls came forward to describe inappropriate sexual behavior by Friedman, including offering one girl money for sex, inviting another to watch him engage in sexual acts with someone, and groping and making sexual advances on a third girl, according to a report on his arrest in The Salem News.
