---- — PEABODY — The Peabody man charged with killing his girlfriend in their Keys Drive apartment last month has been indicted.
An Essex County grand jury on Monday handed up indictments charging Franklin Castano, 43, with murder and illegal possession of a firearm in connection with the Feb. 20 death of Solanlly Paulino, 23.
Paulino, a nanny who attended Salem State University and who also hoped to work as a model, was found in the couple’s apartment, across the street from Northshore Mall.
Police say Castano turned himself in at the Lynn police department, saying he’d killed his “wife.”
Court records showed a history of violence in the relationship, but Paulino eventually agreed to go back to Castano, an all-too-common scenario in domestic violence cases, experts said last month. Two days before her body was found, she had asked management at the apartment complex how she could get Castano out of the apartment and off the lease.
The indictment, which was anticipated, moves the case from Peabody District Court to Salem Superior Court, where Castano will be arraigned again sometime within the next month.
Murder is a charge that is beyond the jurisdiction of a district court.
If convicted, Castano faces a mandatory life sentence without parole.
