Police investigate Target gutter theft

---- — SALEM — Police say somebody stole more than $3,000 worth of aluminum gutters behind the Target store on Highland Avenue early Tuesday morning.

A loss prevention employee at the store reported the theft to police yesterday afternoon, saying that whoever took the gutters did so between 2 and 4 a.m. There was video footage of a suspicious car driving in the area of the theft, but it didn’t show a license plate or any distinguishing features of the vehicle, according to the incident log.

The 13 gutters were worth approximately $250 each.

An officer went to North Shore Recycled Fibers on Jefferson Avenue to check if the gutters had been turned over as scrap, but they hadn’t. Employees at the business were advised to phone police if somebody came in with them.

It wasn’t the only metal theft reported in Salem yesterday. Around 3 p.m., an Orchard Street man reported that at some point between Monday morning and Tuesday evening, somebody had removed an 8-foot steel tubular wood rack from his backyard.

The item was worth about $80, he said.

“He does not know of anyone who would have taken it,” police wrote. “No suspects or witnesses at this time.”
