Thanksgiving market Sunday

---- — SWAMPSCOTT — While the Swampscott Farmers Market officially closed for the season late last month, organizers are gearing up to open the town’s first Indoor Thanksgiving Market on Sunday, market co-manager Kim Fillenworth said.

The town’s Thanksgiving market follows on the heels of a winter market started in Salem last year at Old Town Hall on Derby Square. The Salem Winter Market runs Thursdays, 3 to 6 p.m., through Dec. 19, but not on Thanksgiving.

Swampscott’s Thanksgiving Market will be held in the front atrium of Swampscott High and is meant as a one-time event to help people gobble up the turkey and all the fixings in one place. The idea is to buy the food for the big meal locally from local farms and vendors, Fillenworth said. The market will run this Sunday only, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the high school, 200 Essex St.

Fillenworth said the second season of the Swampscott Farmers Market proved a successful one.

“We had a very good year,” she said. The market saw a steady flow of customers, and farmers and vendors gave it good feedback. In talking with vendors, Fillenworth said it seemed like a good idea to bring a Thanksgiving market to the community.

Vendors will include Longhill Orchard and Farm of West Newbury, which will be bringing fresh, local turkeys. They will also take orders for other items. Fillenworth said it is advisable to check out the farmers market blog, http://swampscottfarmersmarketblog.wordpress.com, for information on how to place an order.

Longhill Orchard, along with Grant Family Farm of Essex, will also bring fresh fall vegetables.

Piper Ranch of Maine will offer grass-fed meats, and Salem Spice will offer specialty seasonings. Other food vendors will include Alfalfa Farm Winery of Topsfield, Eventide Confections of Swampscott, and Big Sky Bakery and Cafe of Watertown, with its assortment of fresh breads.

New to the market will be Massabequash Food of Marblehead, which will offer an assortment of specialty sauces and dressings, Fillenworth said. Three craft vendors will also be on hand offering their wares.

Clark Farm of Danvers will be selling an assortment of winter squashes, apples and tricolor carrots, said farmer and Danvers Selectman Bill Clark.
