Will Hamilton-Wenham defend its "High School Quiz Show" championship title?
You'll have to tune in and watch.
Students from Hamilton-Wenham and Beverly high schools are among the 16 teams competing on the upcoming season of the Jeopardy!-style quiz show. Hamilton-Wenham's first match, against Sharon High School, airs Sunday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m. on WGBH television.
Beverly High will take on a team from Acton-Boxborough in a match that airs Feb. 26.
Last spring, Hamilton-Wenham's quiz show team advanced through the season to be crowned state champions.
Show host Billy Costa grills teams on everything from pop culture and math problems to geography and classic literature.
Beverly High School is on the show for the first time, after a group of students formed a team and began practicing on their own, said Assistant Principal Betty Taylor, one of their coaches.
The team has done practice matches — even going against teams of teachers a couple of times — and used the television studio at the school to get used to the setting, said Taylor.
The Beverly team has a mix of strengths, she said, with different students excelling in math, science, history and humanities.
"These are kids that are involved in different things — music, sports," said Taylor. "They're very much self-motivated. ... It sort of fell into place. They knew their own strengths and worked it out."
Hamilton-Wenham's coach, history teacher Vincent Bucci, could not be reached for comment.
If Hamilton-Wenham wins this weekend, they'll advance to play Brookline, who won the first "Quiz Show" match of the season on Feb. 12. Beverly and Hamilton-Wenham won't play each other unless both teams advance to a semifinal match that airs May 6.
Matches air each Sunday evening through April and May, and the Massachusetts "Quiz Show" champions will be crowned in a match that airs May 20.
