SALEM — Windows in Salem may not be safe, as it appears a vandal with a stash of bricks is on the loose.
There have been at least five instances of bricks flying through windows on Essex and Bridge streets and Ocean Avenue in the last week.
Tuesday, someone threw a brick through the window of an Essex Street condo. Minutes later, around 8 a.m., a resident of Bridge Street told police that a front-door window had been smashed in with a brick.
On Saturday evening, just after 9:30 p.m., a woman told police that she was startled when a brick came crashing through a window at her Essex Street residence. The window is valued at more than $250.
Another report of brick smashing glass came just after 1 a.m. yesterday, when a Bridge Street resident reported hearing glass shattering in the front of her house and found a brick lying on the floor.
Police were again called just after 8 a.m. yesterday by a man reporting that someone threw a brick through the driver's-side rear window of his Volvo station wagon while it was parked in the driveway overnight.
Two of the five victims had theories about who may have thrown the bricks, but nothing concrete, according to the police log. It's unclear if the vandalism is random.
Police are still investigating.
