---- — SALEM — The ballot in tomorrow’s municipal election includes a question on National Grid’s plans to replace the high-voltage transmission lines that run between substations at Salem Harbor Station and Canal Street.
Written by opponents of the current construction route, the nonbinding question asks voters to support an alternative plan to install the cables under Salem Harbor.
National Grid has proposed running the underground cables around Salem Common, down Hawthorne Boulevard and Congress Street, and through The Point, a route opponents contend will disrupt residents and businesses.
Since that ballot question was drafted several months ago, most leading opponents now favor a different alternative to the underwater route: installing the cables along the railroad line.
