Police nab man huffing gas at Wal-Mart

SALEM — Police say a man was arrested on Monday evening after he went into Wal-Mart on Highland Avenue and huffed two canisters of a compressed gas duster used to clean computer equipment.

Steven J. Hachey, 47, of 419 Central St., Saugus, was arrested on charges of shoplifting by asportation under $250 and huffing a substance releasing toxic vapors.

An officer was dispatched to the store about 6:30 p.m. after a report of a “medical aid involving narcotics” and found Hachey sitting with his “legs crossed and his head down” in the electronics department, according to the incident log.

Lt. Mary Butler said Hachey had opened a three-pack of gas duster canisters and huffed one in a store bathroom, then proceeded to the electronics area, where he huffed a second. Hachey reportedly had two canisters on him — one full and one empty — when police arrived.

Ambulance personnel and firefighters responded and medically cleared Hachey before his arrest.

Police were on scene for about a half-hour.
