Description: “I took this photo as the sun was rising over Salem Harbor on Oct. 22. I took several shots, as the scene was changing each second, and this one captured the best color. I was on a moving boat, and I believe the image stabilization helped keep the picture in focus.

“I often have a camera available for spontaneous pictures. I have picked up some tips at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum photography seminars.”

The photographer captures the serene beauty of the rising sun and the calmness of morning light spilling across the water. The image is divided nicely using the rule of thirds, with the horizon line and clouds balancing the photograph. The pier and boat are almost silhouetted against the brilliant sunrise. The morning light backlights the clouds and projects warm light across the sky.
