Scout troop is big news in Boys' Life

BEVERLY — Call them the cover boys.

Boy Scout Troop 2 of Beverly is featured in the cover story of the March issue of Boys’ Life, the Boys Scouts of America magazine with a circulation of more than 1 million.

A photographer followed the troop as it spent a weekend biking around Nantucket last fall. Troop member Jack Suminsby, who’s now a sophomore at Beverly High School, is featured on the cover.

Saying thanks

Mary Garrett was sitting at home watching the funeral of Boston firefighter Lt. Edward Walsh last week, wishing she could be there to pay her respects. But at age 83, it’s not as easy for her and her husband to make it into Boston.

So, what did Garrett do instead? She drove to Super Sub, bought eight large cheesesteak subs and took them down to the main fire station on Hale Street.

”I’m very fond of the Beverly firefighters, all firefighters,” Garrett said. “I could not get up to Boston, so I felt the closest thing I could do was to bring them lunch down at the main station, and that’s what I did. They were very appreciative.”

Dane Street eats

Last week’s story on the possibility of a concession stand at Dane Street Beach prompted some reminiscences about the restaurant that was across the street years ago.

George Ahmed of Salem said his family bought Stromberg’s restaurant in 1947 and changed the name to Seabreeze. The family-run operation made its own candy kissers and ice cream and had a dining room with a jukebox.

Ahmed said the restaurant was knocked down sometime in the 1960s.

In the race

In case you were wondering, Jerry Parisella is running for re-election. The Beverly state representative turned in his nomination papers at City Hall this week.
