Police: Student arrested after report of knives at school

SALEM — A 20-year-old student at Salem Community Charter School was arrested Monday after, police said, he brought two knives to school.

Police said Bjorn A. Nichols, 20, of 56 Margin St., Salem, was taken into custody and charged with assault by a dangerous weapon, carrying a weapon on school premises, resisting arrest, violation of the city’s knife ordinance, disorderly conduct and causing a disturbance.

Lt. Mary Butler said police received a call around 3:30 p.m. from a person at the school who felt threatened by the presence of the knives. No one was actually attacked. She said Nichols had a 2-inch knife and a 3-inch knife, the latter of which was in violation of a city ordinance on blade length.

There were no injuries reported during the incident, although Butler said Nichols did become aggressive and struggled with officers when they tried to arrest him.
