BEVERLY — Police say a Papa Gino’s delivery driver managed to fight off a would-be armed robber on Federal Street shortly after 9 p.m. last night.
Officers initially received word of the armed robbery attempt at 25 Federal St. about 9:10 p.m., according to radio reports. The driver apparently returned to the Cabot Street restaurant before alerting police.
The suspect — described only as a male in a gray hooded sweatshirt — approached the driver’s side of the vehicle while the victim was sitting inside it, pointed a pistol at him and demanded money, Sgt. Lawrence Van Liere said. But the driver fought back, and a violent altercation ensued, during which the victim was able to grab the gun and strike the assailant in the face.
At one point, the suspect dropped the gun to the ground; he then picked it up and fled the scene. He was last seen running on Mulberry Street in the direction of Elliott Street. Police searched that area but were unable to locate anybody suspicious.
A man who answered the phone at Papa Gino’s last night said the victim had sustained cuts and bruises to his arm during the confrontation but was otherwise uninjured.
