Two found with Airsoft rifles

BEVERLY — Officers on the lookout for a man with a gun in the area of Dane Street on Wednesday night ended up seizing Airsoft rifles from two different men.

Police received a report of a man on a bicycle with what appeared to be a rifle in the area of Dane and Essex streets at 8:13 p.m. Officers soon found a 19-year-old fitting that description at Dane and Lovett streets, Officer Dave Costa wrote in an email.

The man admitted to having an Airsoft rifle in his backpack and handed it over to officers. He was not arrested but “advised of the dangerousness of carrying around a realistic looking rifle,” said Costa.

Meanwhile, officers in the area of Dane Street Beach encountered a 20-year-old man and seized an Airsoft rifle from him as well.

Costa said it was unclear whether the two men were connected or whether it was just coincidence they were both in the area with the weapons at the time.
