SWAMPSCOTT — Police say the “brazen” Sunday morning robbery of a Vinnin Square jewelry store could be related to a series of similar incidents throughout the North Shore.
Police responded to an alarm at Kenneth Jon Jewelers at 435 Paradise Road around 4 a.m. to discover that somebody had thrown a sledgehammer through the front window and ransacked six display cases of watches, necklaces and other items, Sgt. William Waters said.
The 50 items stolen were reportedly worth about $8,500.
The sledgehammer was left behind, and it appeared that the robber — or robbers — exited the store through a back door, Waters said.
It was unknown whether a vehicle was involved or if the suspect or suspects left on foot.
Waters said the incident, which was especially brazen given the location’s proximity to a 24-hour CVS, was similar to other recent robberies in the North Shore area, specifically in Peabody and Manchester-by-the-Sea.
A network of area detectives is collaborating to investigate the incidents, he said.
Details of the Swampscott robbery appeared to echo those of the Feb. 13 robbery of Long’s Jewelers at 35 Cross St., Peabody.
During that incident, an intruder or intruders smashed a store window with a dumbbell and stole four pieces of jewelry worth a combined total of $3,000, Lt. Arthur Yeo said. Police first learned of the robbery through a store alarm around 6:10 a.m.
The dumbbell was left behind after the robbery.
