Man, 28, charged with assaulting his pregnant girlfriend

BEVERLY — A Beverly man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of aggravated domestic assault and battery after his girlfriend, who said she is six weeks pregnant, told police he slammed her into a door repeatedly late Monday afternoon.

Christopher Burns, 28, of 3 Chestnut St. pleaded not guilty during his arraignment yesterday in Salem District Court, where a prosecutor filed a motion seeking to have him held without bail.

Prosecutor Patrick Collins told a judge that police were called to the home shortly after 5 p.m. Police found the woman bent over in apparent pain and, she told officers, bleeding. She was taken to Beverly Hospital.

The woman told police that she and Burns got into an argument and that he repeatedly pushed her into a door, hard enough to cause damage to it. A neighbor told officers that she heard three to four loud “thuds” and a woman screaming, “Oh, my God.”

Burns, through his attorney, William O’Hare, denied the allegations, claiming the woman was in violation of a stay-away order from the home because of another legal proceeding involving her and Burns’ father, who also lives there.
