BEVERLY — Joan Liporto, the city schools' director of finance and operations, has resigned to accept a job working for the Newmarket School District in Newmarket, N.H.
Liporto, whose last working day here will be sometime around Thanksgiving, has worked for Beverly schools for more than two decades. In Newmarket, she will be reunited with former schools Superintendent James Hayes, who left the Beverly School District last year. He was replaced by Marie Galinski.
"I think she has been looking for a while and finally found something and made the decision to leave," Galinski said. "I'm going to advertise this weekend for the position."
When contacted about her decision to leave, Liporto said, "I have no comment."
Last year, the city and school district decided to merge maintenance efforts to save money. While city and school officials were working out those details, Liporto tried to block the move and told her boss she would quit if her husband, Tim, wasn't hired to a new position as maintenance director.
"I do need to tell you that if they do totally consolidate and Timmy doesn't get the position, I will be looking because I don't believe that I can work with Mike (Collins, the city public services commissioner)," she wrote in a July 3, 2009, e-mail to Hayes.
Her husband did not get the position.
Galinski said if the district doesn't get any qualified applicants to fill the job, an interim finance director will be hired. If that doesn't happen prior to Liporto's departure, Galinski will step in to fill that role until a successor can be found.
