Police: Drunk dad arrested after trying to pick up kids

SALEM — Police say a man was arrested yesterday after workers at both a daycare center and an elementary school refused to let him pick up his children because he was drunk.

Thomas William Gallant, 46, of 4 Montvale Ave., Stoneham, was arrested on a charge of drunken driving, second offense.

Police received a report at about 1:30 p.m. that the principal at the Horace Mann Laboratory School had refused to let Gallant pick up his daughter when he showed up at the school in an intoxicated state, Lt. Scott Englehardt said.

Officers were looking for Gallant when he showed up next at the Kiddie Koop Child Care Center at 11 Foster St. to pick up his 3-year-old daughter at about 2 p.m. Workers there refused to let him take the girl away because he was “thick-tongued” and smelled of alcohol, said Englehardt. They called police, too.

When officers showed up at the daycare center, Gallant was trying to pull away in his vehicle — without either child. He failed field sobriety tests and refused to take the Breathalyzer, Englehardt said.

The child’s mother ultimately picked up the children, Englehardt said.

The car was released into the custody of the man’s girlfriend, according to the log.
