---- — SALEM — State Rep. John Keenan announced yesterday that he is turning over his annual St. Patrick’s Day breakfast to HAWC in the hope that it will become a major fundraiser for the Salem-based organization that fights domestic abuse on the North Shore.
Keenan, a former prosecutor who handled domestic violence cases, also handed a $5,000 check to Candace Waldron, the executive director of Healing Abuse Working for Change, which works in more than 20 North Shore communities.
“I hope, over the next decade, this event can raise a half-million dollars for all the great work they do,” Keenan told a packed crowd at his annual breakfast at Finz restaurant.
Keenan said he has raised about $250,000 in the political fundraiser over the past eight years.
Gov. Deval Patrick, a breakfast guest, praised Keenan, saying he wanted to tell him “how beautiful I think this is.”
