---- — PEABODY — Police say the suspect responsible for the January shooting of a man on Washington Street was arrested in Lynn yesterday.

Aquiles Antonio Bernabe-Deleon, 21, of 255 Boston St., Apt. 1, Lynn, was arrested on charges of armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm without a license and discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, Officer Michael Crane said in a press release.

At about 9 p.m. on Jan. 3, Peabody police responded to a report of a possible shooting at 197 Washington St., Apt. 3. Upon arrival officers located John Leger, a 27-year-old occupant of that address, suffering from a gunshot wound to his thigh.

Leger was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment and later released.

Peabody patrol officers investigated the incident in collaboration with detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division, Crane said. State police detectives in the Essex County District Attorney’s Office also assisted.

An arrest warrant for Bernabe-Deleon was obtained after he was identified as a suspect.

“Today, information was obtained by the Lynn Police Gang Unit connected to the whereabouts of Bernabe-Deleon,” said Crane. “The suspect was taken into custody without incident at a Lynn location.”

Bernabe-Deleon was being held without bail at the Middleton House of Correction last night and is expected to be arraigned Monday at Peabody District Court.

Police have previously declined to comment on a motive for the shooting, saying only it wasn’t a random act.
