Neighbors pluck canoeist from Peabody pond

PEABODY — A pair of Fairview Avenue residents rushed to the rescue of a neighbor whose canoe capsized on Browns Pond yesterday afternoon.

Atlantic Ambulance EMTs treated David Kain at the scene, then took him to Salem Hospital, according to police Sgt. Timothy Maroney.

Maroney said he and patrolmen Richard Rose and David McGovern responded to the scene after receiving numerous 911 calls just after 4 p.m. of a man yelling for help in Browns Pond, which is near the Lynn city line.

Barry Fritz, who lives two houses down from the banks of the pond, was trimming the hedges in his backyard when he decided to check the level of the water on the pond. The heavy rains last month caused flooding along the pond.

Fritz walked down to the pond and that's when he saw his neighbor in his canoe, but then it flipped over.

Fritz said his neighbor, Sean Mastan, grabbed a canoe and Fritz grabbed some paddles. Together they paddled out about 60 yards to the middle of the pond.

"(Kain) had a life jacket. We had him grab him on to the back of the canoe," Fritz said.

Fritz and Mastan paddled back to shore with Kain holding on.

"He was feeling cold. We told him to keep kicking his legs," Fritz added.

Kain, who is in his early 60s, was able to walk the final steps onto shore, Fritz and police said.
