BEVERLY — The city will hold its annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Beverly High School rear parking lot.
For $20, residents can dispose of such household hazardous waste as oil-based paints, pesticides, car batteries and fluorescent bulbs. This year, Salem residents can also take advantage of the collection, while Beverly residents will be allowed to participate in Salem's event.
Due to the ongoing construction project at the high school, the collection will again be held in the rear parking area (former tennis courts) at the back of the school. Vehicles must enter from Sohier Road onto Panther Way, adjacent to Solar Now, and head to the rear of the school.
The list of acceptable items includes: oil-based paints, varnishes, stains, solvents, photo chemicals, pool chemicals, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, antifreeze, transmission fluid, car batteries, propane tanks and fluorescent bulbs.
Tires will be accepted by a separate vendor at an additional cost of $2 each for tires 16 inches or smaller. Larger tires will be accepted at a higher cost. Tires may be on or off the rims.
Unacceptable items include: Latex paint, waste oil, compressed gas cylinders, ammunition, explosives, prescription medication, syringes, biological waste, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, asbestos, appliances/televisions/computer monitors and electronics.
The event is sponsored by the city of Beverly and organized by the Hazardous Waste Oversight Committee and the Board of Health.
