Man charged with reckless driving in head-on crash

PEABODY — A Wilmington man faces a charge of reckless driving in the wake of a head-on collision on Lowell Street Tuesday afternoon that sent the four occupants of the two vehicles to the hospital.

Jason Daniels, 39, of 44 Shawsheen Ave., was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with possible injuries to his head, leg and internally, said police spokesman Detective Michael Crane. A passenger, a 26-year-old Peabody man, was also taken to Mass General with possible head injuries. In both cases, the injuries were described as serious. Daniels was removed from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life.

Daniels was driving the Chevrolet Camaro said to have sped into oncoming traffic, smashing into a Ford Edge containing a couple ages 80 and 81. Police have not released their names, though Crane said the woman was said to have been released from the hospital with minor injuries, while the man remained hospitalized with serious injuries, apparently to his spine, torso and right leg. He was taken to Salem Hospital and then Lahey Clinic.

A witness, John Berube, described the Camaro as “peeling out” of Ridgefield Street and then suddenly, inexplicably, speeding and going out of control, swerving into the oncoming lane shortly after 4 p.m.

A State Police reconstruction team is currently investigating the accident, according to Crane, and a Peabody detective is also investigating.

“Further charges may or may not follow,” Crane said.
