Rand seeks to grow community involvement

BEVERLY — When Estelle Rand found out that the city’s farmers market was shutting down, she started making phone calls to see if it could be saved.

“Eventually, I made a call and somebody referred me back to myself,” she said. “They said, ‘I think this woman Estelle is doing something.’ That made me realize there was an opportunity to do that.”

Five years later, the Beverly Farmers’ Market is going strong under Rand’s direction. It has grown from a handful of vendors on Cabot Street to 25 vendors at Veterans’ Park near the train station.

Rand is involved with several community activities, including Beverly Main Streets and the city’s Solid Waste Management Committee. Now she hopes to expand her work in the community by becoming a member of the City Council.

“What prompted me is when the seat became open (with Wes Slate’s decision to run for mayor),” she said. “I would not have run against Wes.”

Rand grew up in Rochester, N.H., and moved to Beverly with her future husband 10 years ago. She worked at the Organic Garden Cafe on Cabot Street, then as an administrative assistant for the town of Topsfield, before starting the farmers market.

Encompassing the downtown, the waterfront and the land along the Bass River, Ward 2 has a lot going on, Rand said. She said it will be the next councilor’s job to keep a watchful eye on development, particularly along Rantoul Street.

“That’s a huge concern for a lot of people,” she said. “It’s something that’s changing the face of Beverly and Rantoul Street. What will help with that new development is a really thoughtful approach to the aesthetics and the size of what’s going in down there.”

Rand said she would like to revive the Ward 2 Civic Association as a way for the ward councilor to stay in touch with constituents.
