---- — SALEM — A Salem man is being held without bail in an attack on his girlfriend Sunday that left her needing stitches to her face, police said.
Rafael Rodriguez, 37, of 73 Harbor St., Salem, pleaded not guilty to charges of domestic assault and battery and malicious destruction of property over $250 during his arraignment in Salem District Court yesterday, where a prosecutor asked a judge to hold him without bail as a dangerous person.
Police were called to the man’s apartment Sunday afternoon and found a “flustered” and breathless Rodriguez and a woman covered in bruises, her face red and her lip bleeding from a deep cut, prosecutor Patrick Collins told Judge Matthew Machera.
The woman said the couple was arguing, but had stopped, when Rodriguez blindsided her with a blow to the side of her head, briefly knocking her out, Collins said.
She woke up to find her lip bleeding and asked to go to the hospital. Rodriguez allegedly told her no, then proceeded to smash items around the apartment, including a flat-screen television and the Christmas tree.
The woman was taken to Salem Hospital, Collins said.
Rodriguez will remain in custody at least through Thursday, when a full hearing is scheduled on whether he poses a danger if released, Machera ordered.
