Woman gets probation for trespassing

BEVERLY — She was a good kid who had a bad night, a prosecutor suggested yesterday.

Reagan O’Neill, 19, of 4 Greenleaf Drive, Danvers, was arrested in October after police say she drunkenly climbed through the window of a Beverly home, fixed herself a pound of bacon and some crackers with peanut butter, and passed out on the sofa.

Yesterday, O’Neill, her voice shaking, admitted in Salem District Court that had prosecutors taken the case to trial, they could convict her of a trespassing charge.

But Judge Matthew Machera agreed to a request by O’Neill’s attorney, Randy Chapman, to continue the case without a finding for three months and then dismiss it entirely.

O’Neill, who had no prior criminal record, was discovered inside a home on Glidden Street in Beverly shortly after 8 a.m. on Oct. 5.

The homeowner found her kitchen a mess, the oven left on and pans burning, and O’Neill asleep on the sofa.

Prosecutor Patrick Collins described the homeowner as “very upset.”

And he described O’Neill, who still smelled of alcohol that morning, as very confused.

O’Neill believed that she was in the home of a friend she’d gone out with the night before and told police she had no idea how she ended up inside the Beverly woman’s home.

Police determined that O’Neill had climbed through a window.

Collins suggested a longer continuance in the case, six months, in order to ensure that O’Neill receives treatment for what appears to be an alcohol problem.

“Other than her use of alcohol, Ms. O’Neill appears to be a productive member of society who is going places in her life,” Collins said.

Chapman said O’Neill is currently enrolled at North Shore Community College and is dealing with her problem through treatment and counseling.
