A long time coming for first babies of 2012

Neither of the first babies born in 2012 at Salem and Beverly hospitals were in a hurry to arrive.

In both cases, the mothers labored for more than 24 hours and watched the ball drop in Times Square on television in their hospital rooms before their babies made an arrival in the wee hours of New Year's Day.

Savanna Rose Harris, the first baby of 2012 born at North Shore Medical Center Salem Hospital, was born to Ashley Buelow and Marcus Harris of Peabody at 2:19 a.m.

At Beverly hospital, Katie and Dan Desmond of Gloucester welcomed Brady Matthew Desmond at 3:03 a.m.

It is the first child for both couples.

Buelow had contractions for two days before being admitted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, according to the hospital. Labor progressed through New Year's Eve and doctors eventually decided to do a Cesarean section. Baby Savanna weighed in at seven pounds, one ounce.

"Marcus and my mom were with me through the whole labor," Buelow said in a statement from the hospital. "I had a great support system. She was a great New Year's present and a way to start the year off."

Savanna will stay in the special care nursery for a few days for extra monitoring and is expected to be released Thursday, according to the hospital.

Katie Desmond went into labor at 5:15 p.m. on her due date, Dec. 30. Contractions continued through Friday night and all through Saturday until doctors eventually decided to do a Cesarean section.

Brady Matthew Desmond arrived at a healthy nine pounds, one ounce.

"It was a New Year's Eve to remember," said Katie, when reached yesterday at the hospital. "... It was all worth it in the end."

"(Brady) has been an angel. He's very well-mannered. If he gets upset, he has been relatively easy to coax," she said. "So far so good. He's been great."

Brady is the grandchild of Jim and Betty Gomes of Boxford and Richard and Roberta Desmond of Salem. His 100 year-old great-grandmother, Catherine Desmond of Revere, visited Brady at Beverly Hospital yesterday.
