Marblehead school board hires Salzer for $111K

MARBLEHEAD — MARBLEHEAD — The School Committee has hired Brian Salzer for two years as business manager at a salary of $111,000 for the first year, compensation for the second to be negotiated, according to Superintendent Paul Dulac.

Salzer originally signed a contract with Dulac for $125,000, a $1,000 increase over what he’d earned this year as Swampscott High School principal. That arrangement seemed to fall apart when board members pointed out that Dulac had usurped their legal authority to approve such hirings.

In addition they complained that the salary was roughly $20,000 more than had been budgeted for the position.

Negotiations with Salzer followed and seemed stymied when the board announced it was undergoing a new search for a business manager. Meanwhile, Swampscott Superintendent Lynne Celli, noting Salzer’s eagerness to move into a top administrative position, declined to take him back as Swampscott principal.

The Marblehead board met at one point to discuss the situation, declining to respond when asked if Salzer had raised the possibility of legal action.

A terse press release on Wednesday afternoon simply announced the hiring. “Mr. Salzer will begin immediately,” wrote Dulac.
