Restaurants to ban troublemakers

SALEM — Two dozen downtown restaurants have agreed to ban troublemakers.

“One Strike You’re Out,” a joint effort by the Salem Chamber of Commerce and the Police Department, was announced yesterday.

This campaign by businesses to stem a growing problem comes just days after the Licensing Board held a hearing on Bangkok Paradise, a Washington Street restaurant that has been linked to several late-night incidents.

Under the program, anyone arrested or issued a no-trespass order by police at one of the participating restaurants will be prohibited from entering any of the establishments for six months. Police will provide restaurants with fliers that include a photo of the offender.

Participating restaurants include 43 Church, Adriatic Restaurant & Bar, Bangkok Paradise, Brodie’s Seaport Cafe, Cafe Polonia, Finz Seafood & Grill, Flying Saucer Pizza Company, Fresh Taste of Asia, Great Escape Restaurant, Gulu-Gulu Cafe, Hawthorne Hotel, Murphy’s, Old Spot, O’Neill’s Irish Pub, Red Lulu Cocina and Tequila Bar, Regatta Pub, Rockafellas, Salem Beer Works, Tavern in the Square, The Howling Wolf Taqueria, The Lobster Shanty, and Victoria Station & Vic’s Boathouse.

Police have had to deal with several brawls and incidents of vandalism on recent weekends.

Patrons will be greeted this weekend with “One Strike You’re Out” posters at the entrances of all the establishments.

The chamber and police instituted the same program in 2008 following similar incidents.
