---- — HAMILTON — An interim Department of Public Works director has been hired to run the department until a permanent director is selected.

Dave Hanlon, the retired DPW director in North Reading, started his work on a part-time basis at the beginning of the month, according to Town Manager Michael Lombardo.

Former Director John Tomasz was hired as Salem’s director of public services in January.

Lombardo said an interim director is needed to manage the many ongoing projects in town. The projects include the capping of a landfill, a well abandonment and capital projects.

“We are going into a really busy season,” he said. “We needed somebody to shepherd the projects and keep things moving forward.”

About 24 candidates applied for the permanent post, with applications due last Friday. Lombardo expects to narrow the candidates down for interviews over the next couple of weeks.

The salary range for the new director will be between $73,966 and $93,590, based on experience, Lombardo said.
