---- — SALEM — The Massachusetts National Guard is coming to Salem next month for the 376th anniversary of the First Muster on Salem Common.
The Saturday, April 6, event re-creates the country’s first militia muster, which was held on the 9-acre common. This will be the first muster since President Barack Obama signed legislation officially recognizing Salem as the birthplace of the National Guard.
The First Muster program begins at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church. After a stop at Armory Park, participants march to Salem Common for an 11:30 a.m. ceremony that includes a flyover and cannon salute.
The annual muster is conducted by the Second Corps Cadets Veterans Association in conjunction with the Salem Veterans Council and the National Guard.
