---- — SALEM — A man was arrested on assault charges after a family dispute over emptying the dishwasher led to a violent confrontation on Monday afternoon, police said.

Joseph Perreault, 23, of 21 Planters St., Salem, was arrested on charges of domestic assault and battery, two counts of domestic assault and battery by dangerous weapon, intimidation of a witness, and two counts of malicious destruction over $250.

Officers responded to Perreault’s address after a 5:45 p.m. report that he was engaged in a physical dispute with his brother Kyle, Lt. Scott Englehardt said.

The confrontation apparently began when it was Joseph’s turn to empty the dishwasher and he didn’t want to. Instead, he grabbed a basket of silverware from inside it and threw it at his brother, Englehardt said.

During the ensuing altercation, Perreault also hit his brother with a stepladder, Englehardt said.

He also damaged a television and a cellphone, according to the log.
