Mark Meche, Salem Running to help kids with cancer

SALEM — Mark Meche travels a lot for his job as a principal of Winter Street Architects. That means he's set out on some far-flung training runs this year in places like Seoul, Korea; Sydney, Australia; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"I'm running all over the world," Meche said via cell phone from New York last week. "The running is what helps me become a tourist."

Meche, 51, is running his second Boston Marathon to raise money for Mass General Hospital for Children and its Cancer Care for Children program.

Meche's son, Alexander, was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2006, but has been clear for nearly three years.

Meche has raised about $8,000 so far and hopes to finish somewhere in the ballpark of 4 hours, 15 minutes.

"At the end of the day, I'm running a little less for performance than for fundraising," he said.
