Police arrest sword-wielding Peabody man

PEABODY — A man will face charges after authorities said he waved a sword at police who were checking on his well being on Saturday.

Police responded to James Chouinard's 18 Peabody Square apartment that morning after Chouinard's sister called police to ask that he be checked on, according to police reports.

She told police he called her and said "he had taken all of his pills," the report said.

Police arrived at Chouinard's apartment at 11:23 a.m.

Chouinard, 44, would not let police inside and brandished a sword.

Police talked to Chouinard and convinced him to give up his sword.

He was taken to Salem Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and later transported to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Police charged Chouinard with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
