Peabody schools give parents free passes to games

PEABODY — The sports fees parents pay next year will come with two free passes to each game that charges an entry fee.

School Committee member Edward Nizwantowski, who introduced the measure last week, said he was trying to ease the burden on the taxpayer.

"If that puts $50 in their pockets, I'm not opposed to that," he said.

Nizwantowski had enough support from three other members, Brandi Carpenter, Edward Charest and Beverley Dunne, to get the passes for parents or guardians.

But committee members David McGeney and Michael Moutsoulas wondered if they had enough information to vote.

McGeney said the work of creating and distributing the passes would fall on already busy employees.

Moutsoulas said the measure would chip away at the $23,000 expected in gate receipts.

"So we're going to have to make up the money somewhere else," he said.

Charest disagreed, saying businesses as a practice give away free passes to encourage buying. He thought parents might bring more people to games if they had passes.

"I think it's a great idea and may promote the idea more," he said.
