Machine crushes worker's legs

PEABODY — A paving company employee's legs were crushed by heavy machinery rolling over them last night on Route 128 south.

The accident happened at 10:30 p.m. when the worker was run over by a transfer machine, according to Phil Jodoin, the resident engineer for MassHighway, who was on the scene overseeing the project.

About three miles of highway is being repaved by Brox Industries, a Dracut-based heavy construction company.

A man identified as the supervisor on the scene had no comment.

Peabody Deputy fire Chief Paul Lynch said the injured man was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston by ambulance.

The identity of the injured worker was unavailable last night.

Jodoin said the worker's legs were run over by equipment that transfers asphalt dumped by trucks into a paving machine that puts it on the road.

Work temporarily stopped as workers waited for a safety officer from Brox to arrive at the scene, along with a representative of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Jodoin did not know if work would continue.
