Household hazardous waste day is Saturday

PEABODY — The city's annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is Saturday at the Public Services headquarters on Farm Avenue.

The rain-or-shine event offers residents the chance to dispose of hazardous materials in an environmentally responsible manner. The maximum amount of material a resident can dispose of is a full carload, which is 25 gallons or 25 pounds. Contractors may not participate.

Clean Harbors Environmental Services will accept oil-based paints (no latex paint), varnishes, pesticides, spray cans and other household hazardous chemicals. Television and computer monitors will be accepted with the purchase of a $10 sticker.

Peabody residents will be assessed a $20 fee. The city can only partially subsidize the event this year because of budgetary constraints, Health Director Sharon Cameron said. Residents, however, may dispose of mercury-containing waste, including batteries, thermometers, thermostats, and fluorescent lamps at no cost.

Proof of residency is required. Nonresidents may drop off materials only from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be required to pay the full fee ($28 for up to 10 pounds/gallons or $45 for up to 25 pounds/gallons).

The city has asked residents to leave materials in original labeled containers, to tighten caps and lids, to place containers in sturdy upright boxes rather than in garbage bags, to avoid smoking while handling hazardous materials and, most important, to not mix chemicals.

Clean Harbors will not accept commercial or industrial waste, latex paint, ammunition, asbestos, radioactive material, fire extinguishers, or medical or biological waste.
