Water main break slows cars

BEVERLY — Workers accidentally broke a water main on Elliott Street yesterday around 1 p.m., tying up traffic for about an hour until the break was fixed.

Department of Public Services Director Michael Collins said a private contractor was disconnecting the water service for the CVS plaza at the corner of Rantoul and Elliott streets when the break occurred.

The water service was disconnected in preparation for the demolition of the CVS plaza to make way for a new CVS.

City workers opened fire hydrants in the area to release the pressure while working to repair the break.

Elliott Street was temporarily closed to eastbound traffic between Beckford and Rantoul streets.
