WENHAM — Police plan to summons three local residents after police said they broke into the music center at Gordon College on Sunday, smoked cigarettes, and tried to light dry-erase markers on fire.
The residents, two who are from Hamilton and one from Manchester, were discovered on the Wenham campus inside the Phillips Music Center by Pete Cherry, a public safety officer at the college.
Police Sgt. Jeffrey Tobey said the three — Trevor D. Brooks, 23, of 446 Essex St., Hamilton; Camilla Lambert, 18, of 160 Pine St., Manchester; and Johnmark Unsworth, 22, of 11 Bittersweet Lane, Hamilton — initially lied to Cherry about who they were and what they were doing there.
Tobey said the three are not students and have no connection to the college. He said one of the three knows a professor.
But later that day, one of the three went to the Wenham police station to explain to Patrolman Shane Kavanagh what happened, Tobey said.
They insist they got in through an unlocked door.
In order to smoke cigarettes, Tobey said Unsworth disabled the smoke detector.
"For some odd reason, they decided to light the eraser on fire. It did burn and they tried to put it out on the wall," Tobey said. "And they burned some of the dry-erase markers as well."
All three will be summonsed to court for breaking and entering to commit a misdemeanor, smoking in a public place, and attempting to start a fire. Unsworth will also be summonsed for disabling a fire alarm.
