Firefighters free driver trapped in Beverly crash

By Bruno Matarazzo Jr.

BEVERLY — A single-car crash temporarily shut down Elliott Street near Echo Avenue last night, trapping the driver inside.

Police were the first on scene at 8:40 p.m. for the crash involving a black Audi A6.

The driver, Henry Lutts, 18, of 9 Rand Road, Salem, was the only person in the vehicle, fire Deputy Chief Peter O'Connor said. Lutts was conscious and alert but pinned under the steering wheel.

Firefighters Ross McCulloch and Jon Palm from Engine 5 at the North Beverly station started using hydraulic extraction tools to remove the door while fire Lt. Don Philpot was in the car aiding the driver.

Lutts was removed and tended to by paramedics from Northeast Regional Ambulance and brought to Beverly Hospital.

He will be summonsed on charges of negligent driving and a stop-sign violation.

Patrolman Ken Rollins is investigating the crash. Patrolmen Erik Abrahamson and Don Call were also on scene.
