Police probe spree of car break-ins

DANVERS — Under the cover of darkness, police say, one person or more set out across Danvers breaking into cars and taking anything of value.

In total, 14 cars parked in driveways were broken into from 11 p.m. Sunday to sunrise yesterday. All of the cars were unlocked, police Capt. Edmund Plamowski said.

"Obviously, they were mobile," Plamowski said of the culprit or culprits. "(The break-ins) were sporadic, all over."

Break-ins occurring in driveways are not uncommon in Danvers or Peabody.

In the past month, there have been 77 reports of such instances in the two neighboring towns, according to Danvers police.

The recent rash included streets across Danvers: two on Arthur Street; three on Massachusetts Avenue; two on Stafford Road; and one each on Amherst, Crane, Water, Chase and Liberty streets, Sherwood Avenue and Barbara Road.

Items stolen included CDs, loose change, hand tools and GPS devices.

The only lead in the break-ins is a report of a suspicious vehicle, a newer-model, silver Monte Carlo with tinted windows on Liberty Street. However, Plamowski said he does not know if the Monte Carlo is connected to the break-ins.

Plamowski advises residents to keep vehicles locked and valuables out of their cars.

If residents spot any suspicious vehicles or people, call the police at 978-774-1212.
