City snow emergency kicks in at noon today

SALEM — A snow emergency is in effect today beginning at noon as the region braces for a major snowstorm.

That means vehicles must be completely removed from streets and sidewalks or risk being towed, according to city officials.

Property owners must also keep their sidewalks shoveled.

They have six hours after the snowfall stops (or until noon if the snow stops in the middle of the night) to remove snow from their sidewalks.

Those who don't could be fined $25.

Shoveling snow into the street is prohibited and subject to a $20 fine.

The city also urged residents to shovel out any fire hydrants near their homes.
