NEW YORK (AP) — Police have arrested a Brooklyn woman in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left a 22-year-old mayoral aide from Swampscott, Mass., in a coma with severe brain injuries.
Police say 28-year-old Frances Jasmin was charged yesterday with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries. The name of her lawyer was not immediately available.
Erinn Phelan and her 23-year-old friend were struck as they crossed a Brooklyn street on Feb. 21. Phelan was credited with pushing her friend Alma Guerrero out of the car's path before she herself was struck. Her friend suffered a broken collarbone.
Police had initially suspected the car's owner and defendant's sister, Cindy Jasmin, as the driver.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg released a statement yesterday saying that Phelan was a fighter and that everyone in City Hall and around the city were praying for her.
