DANVERS — After more than two weeks of repairs, Route 62 (Maple Street) reopened at 3:05 p.m. yesterday, Town Manager Wayne Marquis said.
A 500-foot stretch of the road had been closed since the morning of March 18 when a 15-foot-deep sinkhole opened between Summer and Vineyard streets when runoff from heavy rains washed out a wall of a culvert running under Route 62. The Street Division closed a portion of the busy road, and police detoured traffic around the work area.
Crews from Danvers-based J. Masterson Construction Corp. repaired the culvert by plugging the upstream inlet with an inflatable plug and diverting water around the site with three large pumps, according to an e-mail memo from Town Engineer Rick Rodgers.
Crews had to deal with more rain last week while they formed new, steel-reinforced concrete walls, capped the culvert and installed concrete between a previous repair in 2006.
Crews filled the hole late last week and Monday and paved yesterday. Marquis has estimated the cost of the emergency repairs could run as high as $300,000.
