SALEM — Catholic Charities North will celebrate its 90th anniversary Thursday night at the Hawthorne Hotel.
More than 300 guests will be on hand to honor a nonprofit organization that opened in Lynn and Salem after World War I to serve returning veterans. Today, it is helping families struggling in the aftermath of a recession.
"We have the same mission," Development Coordinator Sarah Bartley said. "We're doing a lot of the same type of programs we were doing 90 years ago, but our programs have evolved to meet the changing needs of the community."
Catholic Charities North serves more than 30 communities in the region, operating mental health clinics and child care and counseling centers, as well as offering education and social service programs. This year, the organization will serve more than 18,000 people north of Boston.
On Thursday night, the hotel will decorate four rooms, including the main ballroom, to represent different eras in the history of Catholic Charities North, which opened an office on Essex Street in Salem in 1919.
The hotel also will serve food that was popular over that time span, ranging from snickerdoodle cookies from the 1920s to a seaweed salad and chocolate fountain from modern times. Main dishes are just as varied, including everything from creamed chipped beef on toast points to carved steamship round of beef.
Tickets are still available at the charity's website (www.ccab.org/north90) or by calling Bartley at 781-593-2312.
