SALEM —
Salem Harbor Station will close in 2014, plant owner Dominion announced today.
Two of the small coal-burning units will be shut down by the end of the year, while two larger coal- and oil-burning generators will stay in operation until June 1, 2014, the company said.
“This was a decision we had to make given the significant costs required to keep the station in compliance with pending environmental regulations and the falling margins for coal stations selling electricity in New England,” said David Christian, chief executive officer of Dominion Generation.
Between 25 and 30 jobs will be eliminated this year, a spokesman said.
Salem Harbor Station, which has been in operation since 1951, has about 150 employees and is the city’s largest taxpayer.
