IPSWICH — Ipswich is one of five towns selected for state money through the Coastal Pollution Remediation grant program.
The grants, announced yesterday by Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Richard Sullivan Jr., were awarded to projects aimed at reducing pollution and protecting Massachusetts coastal waters.
Ipswich will receive $37,655 in state money for the second phase of a project to design "best management practices" for storm water discharge into Farley Brook.
Farley Brook has been identified by the state as a significant source of bacteria flowing into the Ipswich River, which has led to the closure of shellfish harvesting areas.
Pollution can occur when contaminants are picked up by rain water and snow melt and are carried over land or through drainage systems to the nearest water body.
The town of Ipswich will match the state grant with $12,735 toward the project.
Other 2012 CPR grant recipients include the communities of Duxbury, Hingham, Marshfield and Plymouth.
