Police probe death of YMCA resident

BEVERLY — Police are investigating the sudden death of a 65-year-old man inside the YMCA on Essex Street yesterday afternoon.

Beverly police spokesman Mike Boccuzzi declined to release the man’s identity last night, saying the investigation into his unattended death was ongoing. He said preliminary investigation into the cause of death had so far proved “inconclusive,” apparently leaving a possibility that it was suspicious.

YMCA Chief Operations Officer Chris Lovasco said last night that the man had been a longtime resident of the YMCA and that his body had been found in his room by a maintenance worker.

State police and the local department’s Criminal Investigations Division are investigating the incident.
