Fire damages home at golf club

WENHAM — A fire in the kitchen damaged a home on the grounds of Wenham Country Club yesterday.

Fire Chief Bob Blanchard said firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire in the kitchen area of 94 Main St., a ranch-style house on the entrance road to the golf course off Route 1A.

Wenham and Hamilton firefighters contained the fire to the kitchen area and the attic above it, Blanchard said.

“There was lots of smoke damage because it’s all one level, so there was smoke throughout the house,” he said.

Nobody was home when the fire started. Blanchard said the homeowner discovered the fire when he returned and called the Fire Department at 8:37 a.m.

Police shut down Route 1A because firefighters had to lay their hoses across the road.

Blanchard said nobody was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
