Police: Rollover driver rushing to break up fight

MARBLEHEAD — Police say the driver in a rollover wreck on Atlantic Avenue early Wednesday morning told officers that he had been rushing to intervene in a fight involving a knife.

Police and medics responded to the area of 359 Atlantic Ave. after a 1:37 a.m. report of an accident involving an Acura MDX.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Wesley Groom of Swampscott, told police he had been rushing to get to 4 Cross St., where a 17-year-old girl he knew had been threatened by a man with a knife, according to a police report on the incident.

Officers responded to the address and forced their way inside when nobody answered the door. They found the girl and her 13-year-old sister unharmed and subsequently ordered a man, later identified as Zachary Bruso, 19, of 13 Pacific St., Lynn, out of a bed at gunpoint, according to the report.

The girl told police that Bruso had threatened to harm himself with a knife during an argument about his drinking but that he hadn’t followed through on the threat, according to the report. No knife was found.

Police say Bruso was released to his mother but that he subsequently became “violent and tumultuous” and was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct.

An officer contacted the Department of Children and Families about the incident after discovering that the girls were home alone while their mother traveled out of state, according to the report. The girls were released into the care of the Groom family.

The accident snapped a light pole in half, and a person was transported to Salem Hospital with undisclosed injuries, according to the log.
