---- — PEABODY — A five-car accident on Route 128 north sent two drivers to the hospital and backed up traffic for the better part of an hour yesterday afternoon, police said.

The drivers were transported to Salem Hospital with injuries a firefighter characterized as “minor.”

The accident occurred near the split of Route 128 and Route 95, shortly before the Centennial Drive exit. State police were already responding to that location after a 12:05 p.m. report that an abandoned motor vehicle was partially obstructing the left-most lane when the accident occurred, according to a trooper at the Danvers barracks.

Police were unable to elaborate on whether the disabled motor vehicle was involved in the accident, or how the accident started. At least one vehicle rolled over.

Two of the four lanes were closed while the Massachusetts Department of Transportation cleaned up the scene and police investigated.

Peabody’s Engine 5 and Ladder 1 responded to the scene. There was no fire or entrapment, a firefighter said.

No arrests were made in connection to the incident.
